Cable Management That Takes 10 Minutes (Not a Weekend)
Cable management content is dominated by people who route custom-sleeved cables through drilled channels. This is not that. This is the ten-minute version that gets you 90% of the result with three cheap items and zero drilling.
The $20 kit
- Under-desk cable tray (~$12) — screws or clamps under the back edge of the desk. Every power strip and adapter goes in it. This is the whole trick: get the pile off the floor and out of sight.
- Adhesive cable clips, pack of 10 (~$5) — three on the back edge of the desk route the cables that have to travel (monitor, lamp, charger).
- Velcro tie roll (~$4) — bundle the excess length instead of letting it dangle. Velcro, not zip ties — you will re-do this someday.
The 10 minutes
- Unplug everything. Yes, everything. (2 min)
- Power strip into the tray, plugs back in from there. (3 min)
- Clip the traveling cables along the desk’s back edge. (2 min)
- Velcro-bundle every slack loop. (2 min)
- Look under the desk. Empty floor. (1 min, spent feeling smug)
What to skip
Cable sleeves (look great, fight you on every change), in-wall routing (you rent), and any “cable management box” bigger than the tray — it’s a drawer of shame that costs money.
The floor-level difference is bigger than it sounds: a clear floor means vacuuming happens, feet stretch, and the desk corner stops feeling like a server closet.
